The World as Our Classroom: Homeschooling Adventures in Los Angeles

This is where homeschooling gets really fun – being able to visit cool places on random weekdays when they’re not packed! Did you know that LA has over 750 museums, nearly more than any other city in the world? That’s a pretty amazing plus when you want the world to be your classroom! If only we could do something about the barrage of traffic 😣

Our Favorite Learning Spots Around LA

I’ve fallen in love with the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia. Something about wandering through all those different garden spaces with peacocks roaming around just feels magical. Let’s be honest though – my kids are mostly there for the peacock viewings and the French fries at the cafe, but hey, I’ll take it! They’re absorbing plant knowledge by osmosis while munching those fries, I’m convinced of it.

But our absolute favorite spot has to be Crystal Cove Beach. The kids are obsessed with the tidepools where we discover sea anemones and giant purple starfish – we’ve spent hours watching marine life during repeated visits. It’s turned into the perfect living science lesson! There’s something powerful about returning to the same natural spot throughout the year and documenting changes. The children have developed a connection to this place that no textbook could ever create.

More Must-Visit Homeschool Adventures

Some of our other regular spots:

  • Descanso Gardens (They have free homeschool days every couple of months)
  • Knott’s Berry Farm (a theme park with built-in history lessons)
  • Kidspace Children’s Museum in Pasadena
  • San Diego Zoo (worth the drive!)
  • Vincent Lugo Park with those awesome concrete sea creature sculptures

As the designated snack queen (never leave home without a fully-stocked backpack!), I’ve learned that well-fed children are happier explorers. My bigger challenge is battling the LA heat, which my Canuck children aren’t very adapted to yet. Any tips for indoor places to beat this Summer is greatly welcomed. Nothing like watching Canadian kids discover that sunshine can actually be TOO much of a good thing!

Better Together: The Power of Community Learning

What we’ve discovered is that these adventures are infinitely better when shared with other families. That’s actually why we wanted to extend HeartWise here in SoCal from what we had in Vancouver—we missed that regular community of families learning alongside each other.

There’s something special about watching kids explore together, building friendships while they’re building knowledge. The parents benefit too—sharing the planning load, trading tips about hidden shady spots in this relentless sunshine, and honestly, just having adult conversation while the kids are happily distracted by something cool.

The Homeschool Advantage: Weekday Freedom

One of the greatest joys of homeschooling is the flexibility to explore these treasures on quiet weekdays. We’ve had entire museums practically to ourselves, allowing for unhurried exploration. The children can take their time, ask questions, and follow their curiosity without being rushed or distracted by crowds.

This flexibility also allows us to time our visits strategically—catching seasonal phenomena, special exhibitions, or programs designed specifically for educational groups. Many museums and cultural institutions offer special homeschool programs if you ask, often at reduced rates.

HeartWise: Building Community Through Exploration

Our HeartWise community in Vancouver showed us just how powerful collaborative learning can be. Weekly field trips, project-based classes, and seasonal celebrations created a rhythm to our homeschooling that supported both children and parents. We’re excited to build that same kind of vibrant, supportive community here in Southern California.

HeartWise offers a space where families learn shoulder to shoulder through regular outings and hands-on projects. When children and parents explore side by side, something magical happens – knowledge isn’t just transferred, it’s discovered together.
